There are five key areas transportation safety leaders need to consider in evaluating the efficacy of deploying telematics:
There are legitimate efficiencies to be gained with telematics. Working with our transportation experts lets you determine your company’s key drivers for launching a telematics program. Considerations include:
- Decreased Fuel Costs
- Improved Safety
- Enhanced Productivity/Fewer Delays
- Accident Rate Declines
- Reduction in Maintenance
The key to successfully launching a telematics program is determining the best tracking system for your company.
- Vehicle Tracking
- Driver Tracking
- Outboard facing
- Do you want to see what the driver is seeing?
- Do you want to see what the driver and passengers are doing?
The success of your telematics program depends on successfully incorporating it into the overall company policy and clearly defining progressive actions. Considerations include:
- Camera policy
- Progressive reaction/coaching
- Video Storage/Viewing
The key to launching telematics is effectively communicating how the system works and why the company is installing telematics. Explaining the safety advantages for passengers and drivers is paramount. Addressing action items: Expect to see the following in the first 30 days of installation:
- Blocked cameras
- Cell phone use
- Speeding
- Aggressive driving
- Distracted driving
The key to a successful telematics program is to do something with what you capture and discover. Simply put, videos must be viewed and plans in place to progressively coach and address infractions. Key considerations:
- Viewing videos: When, how often, and who will be reviewing videos?
- Training: How will your company positively address events in the video and coach the desired behaviors?
- Enforcement: How will your company address progressive coaching or disciplinary actions?
“Kevin has been instrumental in taking our CDL/DOT program to the next level. If I have a question, Kevin is always a phone call away to provide me with an answer. I couldn’t imagine tackling our DOT program without Kevin’s expertise. He prioritizes getting in front of our drivers and educating them, whether in the classroom or the field, by conducting mock inspections. “
